12:07 pm - Unwarranted complaints/nostalgia

I'm terribly nostalgic. It's a fault. However, up 'till now, it's always been somewhat warranted nostalgia. What i mean by that is that none of my nostalgia has ever turned out, through hindsight or additional experience, to be completely unwarranted. Consider this a correction to my own experience of myself.

When i was in Dublin, i remember thinking (and saying) fairly often that i wished i had my desktop computer, Agrippa, with me, and that i was looking forward to getting to use him again.

For the love of god why?

Despite his excess of hard drive space, deliciously retro clicky IBM keyboard circa 1984 (no, that's not snarky, i wouldn't trade it for anything), finger-operated trackball, decent ATI Radeon, fancy new LCD monitor, and lightning fast even newer DVD burner, the darn thing is a dinosaur. A 900mhz Celeron with a gig of RAM is just not cutting it these days.

Sure, i can burn an audio CD in a matter of a minute or so, but i can't do *anything* else with the machine at the same time. If i have more than a few Firefox tabs open (where "a few = ~20 for my purposes), the darn thing slows down to a crawl, and heaven forbid i launch Open Office.

I've always said that i only upgrade computer hardware when my machine starts to become too slow/cumbersome for my humble uses. I don't need to run the latest FPS or fancy animation rendering programs, but i reckon it's not too much to ask that i can run my word processor *and* listen to music whilst surfing the web.

For poor little Agrippa, i think it's time. I have my eyeballs on an AMd 3500 or 3700. Just wish i had more than $3.50 in my checking account at the moment. Maybe a few paychecks from now.

In good financial news, one of my student loans was completely paid off as of Friday last. $5,000 down and only $17,000 more to go ;)

***edit**
I won't get to listen to this story, as i have to run off to work, but a headline on the noontime news just told me that the first few minutes after waking up is akin to being legally drunk. For me, it's probably closer to the first hour or so.

Heh. attutle and I are completely smitten with old DEC keyboards (circa about 1985). The control key is where I like it (immediately to the left of the caps lock key). On all other keyboards, I'm forever hitting caps lock when I meant to hit control.

I'm also a huge fan of track balls. I prefer the right-handed thumb-operated ones from Logitech. The only time in my life that I used a mouse regularly, I learned to hate them.

Congratulations for paying off your student loan! That's fantastic! If you'd like to come on down to the Blues Cellar this evening with spsh, me, and whoever else comes, I'll buy you a celebratory drink.

It's strangely hard to find finger operated trackballs rather than thumb operated ones. My Logitech Trackman Marble died a few years ago and i spent forever trying to eBay for a new one before resigning myself to the fact that Microsoft was the only company making them these days. I like the Microsoft one i have now, but it's no Trackman ;)

Where's the Blues Cellar? Depending on when i get out of work (usually around 8-ish) and how drained i feel, it might be a possibility.

Blues Cellar is on Central, just east of Girard. It's in the basement of the restaurant, Zinc. We're planning to meet there at 5:30, and I'm not sure how long we'll stay. Do you have my cell number?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus - I especially like the Only Fools & Horses version.
Even if you replace the mb and cpu and psu he's still the same computer, neh? Even if you then replace the case at a later date. For example, though every part of my pc has been replaced, apart from the floppy drive (which was, however, sprayed silver), I still consider her to be the "Mary 2000."
