Ok, that's just what it felt like.

Continuing the "birthday in February" trend, damndirtyzombie bought me a new motherboard and cpu from PC Club on Sunday (thanks for the advice djsparkydog and C). I threw in for a new case and memory and here i've gone from a Celeron 900 with a gig of RAM to an Athlon 64 3500+ with a gig of RAM and a really nifty motherboard with a GeForce 6100 built in.

The last two days have been spent in an epic battle between good and evil trying to install Ubuntu, which decided that it didn't want to install from my DVD burner, hung on normal install from a regular CD-ROM, and was finally battled into submission by installing minimally (just the base system) and then using Aptitude to install the ordinary desktop packages. X is up and running and everything seems to work. Yar, still going to dual boot Windows if i can manage to get XP to see the network (there are just programs that i can't live without that only run in Win...unless i can get them running in an emulator), but i'm currently posting from my new Linux system.

In other news, in addition to the capitalism, this was one of the best weekends in a very long time. Happiness abounds, and since he'll be here in less than a month, i can officially start the countdown to nephster13's arrival in NM.

Now, sleep.

Indeed. But it would be in an English, not Irish, accent of course. Perhaps that will suffice? I dunno if Kat would say i rock muchly, but a little I hope. I'm now trying to think of who you know called Mark in Dublin ;) My phoneline at home is buggered for the foreseeable hence only sending these little snippets at work...

*I* don't know anyone named Mark in Dublin. So maybe it's some friend of B's that _wirehead_ knows?

If you are entertaining any notion of running Windows programs under Wine, you should consider installing the i386 version of Ubuntu instead of the AMD64. Wine won't compile on 64-bit processors. (You can, I believe, run Wine inside a 32-bit chroot jail on a 64-bit Ubuntu install. But that's a lot harder than just installing the i386 version of the OS.) Installing the i386 version will also allow you to run Flash and the win32 video codecs without having to setup chroot.

Of course, when there is no stable 64-bit Windows, part of the appeal of running GNU/Linux is getting to use those 64 bits. And you won't get to if you install the i386 version.
