12:17 pm - More car stuff

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

The slightly irksome car collision place phoned me today, it *seems* that they're fixing my car now and it will be done before the day's end. The car guy also told me that my car is leaking coolant and it appears that the water pump is broken. He says that they can't do the work there, but informed me that the timing belt runs the water pump in my car, so fixing it will involve removing (and it's smart to change it once you've removed it of course) the timing belt as well. Now, i'm fairly confident that i can work out how to fix most things in my car, but timing belts aren't something i have any experience with and i don't have a timing gun. Anyone have any hints? Offers of in-person help will be met with gratitude and a dinner of your choice.

I encourage you to ask this question directly to ilcylic. I know that he can tell you whether or not these are things you might be able to fix on your car. A text msg to his phone might be the most effective way to reach him at the moment.

Nod, i usually do. But i'm feeling a bit guilty about only contacting him to pester him with auto questions lately.

*grin*

informed me that the timing belt runs the water pump in my car

What kind of car do you have? I've never heard of this before. If it's real, it's the absolute dumbest thing I've ever heard in car design. Well, except specifying Lucas electronics, but that's not something you'll have to worry about.

It's a Geo Metro, and the interweb seems to confirm that it's true.

Wow. That's fucking retarded.

Replacing the timing belt may not require a timing gun, as there are marks on everything, so as long as nothing moves while it's apart, everything should be ok.

I'll take a look at it, if you like.

That would be lovely, actually. I'm sure it's not a huge deal. The belt is intact and working at the moment, and it's only the water pump that's the issue...going to run out and see if i can find a Haynes or Chilton's manual for my car this evening to see what the deal might be.
