10:43 pm - Linux annoyances

What's a girl got to do to change over from Win-evil to Linux? Argh. On my laptop, it's abysmally slow atm and it finds my trackball too sensitive; on my desktop, it's decided it can't auto-detect the ethernet connection. Argh. There always seems to be something. I reckon, on some level, that's the appeal of Linux--that you have to play with it...tweak it--but at the moment, i just want a working system. Really, i love Linux. I do. But it will never take amongst the rabble rabble if it doesn't just *work* out of the box. For my desktop, this time i'm committed. I've devoted 15g of my 40g drive to Win, and the rest to Linux. Ok...maybe that's not as committed as some, but i'm weaning. It's like using a Nicotine Patch instead of quitting cold turkey...or so i like to tell myself. Anyway, i'm installing Ubuntu Dapper at the moment. At least it will install from my DVD-R drive, which Badger wouldn't. But Dapper thought my network wasn't using DHCP, which it is. So yeah, i'm annoyed. Luckily, my annoyance is mitigated by watching the "it's coming right for us" episode of South Park.

In other news, i registered at TVI for the summer to properly defer my student loans. I'm going to take Drawing I, and have to do one more. Any ideas?

In other, other news, i have a bad joke: why do Marxists like instant tea? Because proper tea is theft. Yeah, it sounds better outloud, so read it that way. Courtesy of databeast.

my recent discovery that openoffice is a reasonable replacement for MS Word has inspired me to try that again, myself. i think i'm going to go with FreeBSD though. i'll let you know how it goes.

I've been using Open Office for ages. It's got a Win port. I just seem to tend to have newer/more non-linux-friendly hardware than Linux likes. Really, it's games and Fruity Loops that keeps me using Windows at all, despite the annoying bits.

Sounds like most of your annoyances can be attributed to less-than-perfect installation/configuration tools. Sometimes they work great, sometimes they don't. The answer is always just getting down and dirty with vi and your conf files. For instance, your DHCP issue may be solved by just telling /etc/network/interfaces file that you are, in fact, using DHCP. It's a little scary at first, but really, it's a lot better than the autoconfiguration bullshit.

Nah, i can hand-configure it just fine and have done such things on numerous occasions. I just don't enjoy it. I don't mind tinkering with my OS to tweak things or add new things, but i want my hardware to work out of the freaking box. Also, the slightly earlier version of Ubuntu did correctly auto detect my nic card, so it's just annoying.
