Damn.

On one hand, as a library user, I am a little... Offended? at the fact that she was even arrested for this, that a warrant was issued and all. I mean, it's $159 to the library and $175 for the court and it doesn't begin to cover the cost they spent on prosecuting her in the first place.

But then there's another part of me that did just move and I did pack everything up and you notice things like that, the library books are still with you. Libraries DO send out notices. She probably didn't have the money for the original fine and let it escalate from there. I don't buy the 'I didn't know you were trying to let me know my books were late!' scenario though. She didn't forward her mail?

Now as far as keeping books is the same as stealing, yeah... It is. Libraries typically don't have the best budgets to begin with, so they try and get the best editions available so they last and to have someone just keep it? Not theirs, therefore yeah.. It's theft. I'm surprised the reporter even felt they had to mention it and hope it's not a sign of the g.p's dwindling intelligence.

Yeah, seems a bit odd, but most libraries don't do anything to retain their books other than keep sending notices and cancelling memberships, so at least they're trying?

Cool. Alis told me, but i was too cold to be arsed to walk over today from class ;).

I was actually going to phone you today and ask: since two of the things i'm bringing to the naked lady party are fairly large (the TV and a large pet carrier) would it be ok for me to drop them off at yours sometime the week of the 16-22 of this month since i'm renting a car for my Irish friends' visit and they'll be a bitch to take on the bus? If it's too much trouble, no worries, i'm sure i can catch a lift with someone who will help me ferry them over for the party itself.

That shouldn't be a problem at all to bring them by that week. You have my number? I'll see you before anyways...

Groovy. Hey, your friend from Ireland called to put together a henna workshop while she's in town and I just happen to be planning new workshops, so it worked out well. I'll have a new workshop on the 19th. But I couldn't hear her name because of my crappy phone. Do you know who I might have been talking to?

Oh, i agree. I get so mad at people for doing that. And *writing in* them, which happens all the damned time in academic libraries. Even with highlighter and pen! {grrrr}

Heh, what is the world coming to? Tchah.

She said it might turn her son off to libraries....um, as opposed to turning her son *on* to a life of petty crime? Not to mention what a hideously-worded sentence that is. ;p

Dan Zack, library director, says keeping overdue books is like stealing merchandise from a store. - a valid point, but it reminds me of that I.T. Crowd skit about online piracy; "would you steal an old lady's purse? etc - well, illegally downloading movies is just as bad....would you shoot a policeman, and then go to the toilet in his helmet, and then deliver the helmet to his grieving widow? and then kill her!?" etc ;)

And the comment about writing in library books gave me a scary flashback to one of my Classics professors in college, who was old enough to give the impression that he knew Dante *personally* ;p...and is *still* there, afaik...anyway, he usually went off on a tirade every few lectures or so about those "dirty little students defacing the works of greater minds with their dirty little pencils..." I think I probably told you that before, but it just popped into my head again now, as I've been having a lot of "flashbacks" lately...damn acid flashbacks. ;p

Also, without getting into the whole thing right now, yay for public LJ posts... ;p and time seems to be flying lately, but I'll try to poke ya properly soon, definitely before the mad Irish peeps visit. ;)
*hug*

Yar, i think most universities do that sort of thing. Unlike regular libraries, they have something serious they can hold over our heads ;)

Well, tazing is too good for 'em, that's what I say, dirty bookthieves.
Then again, I've been secretly adding poison to the pages of books in Trinity. Only 4.5 million to go! Eat your heart out Jorge of Burgos...
