02:29 pm - another good reason to switch from AIM to...anything else

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

AOL have always been evil, but they've just changed the AIM service agreement and thereby got more so.

for those too lazy to click through, this is from the new service agreement:

"Although you or the owner of the Content retain ownership of all right, title and interest in Content that you post to any AIM Product, AOL owns all right, title and interest in any compilation, collective work or other derivative work created by AOL using or incorporating this Content. In addition, by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the Content or to be compensated for any such uses."

can i get chips with that paranoia please?

i'm not sure how Yahoo works, but i'm sure you can find a copy of their privacy statement on their website somewhere. i'm guessing it's probably less draconian.

they do seem to have an OSX Mac version of the program for AIM/ICQ

argh. sorry i made a hash of all of the lj threaded comments, i made a horrible typo in the comment there and couldn't live with myself till i'd fixed it. since you can't "edit" comments, i deleted and reposted it while people were responding to me...blah.

a refers to the Mac mouse (particularly the newer, more stylised ones that don't actually *have* a button but *are* a button). as in "mash palm to continue"

Does the touchpad mouse have one clicker button or two, or none? Oh, I am still going to send you something, Levenia, but it's turned into a longer project than anticipated. Does your computer have a DVD drive or a CD drive, and can you play most .avi files? Also, is there a recent Winamp that runs on OS 9.0.4?

i'm sure they'll work, assuming the right codecs are installed. .avi isn't Win specific.

the bad news, of course, is that ICQ is also owned by AOL, and MSN Messenger has done the same thing for some time, so unless you want to switch to something like Jabber, it may not be possible to escape.

however, check out ilcylic's suggestion above, the program's easy enough to use and install (even endon_neu could figure it out ;P) and subverts their evil porpoises entirely.

and by the way, how the heck are ya? {hug}

*twitch*

So, not knowing precisely how this works, is this things that go through just AIM specifically, or are GAIM and Trillian, who use the AIM network to communicate with AIM users, at risk as well?

Meh, not that it matters to me. I don't IM anyway.
