so, i've been slacking on posting any pictures of Ireland here, which is just silly, since i do seem to take quite a few on occasion. here's a sample of ones i've done with the digital camera. clicking them will take you to larger versions.

...except for the swans - they're evil, I tell you, pure evil!

Or geese! The most wicked of all waterfowl!

No way ... the nastiest fowl of all time are certainly pigeons!

They're ugly, they make stupid noises, and wherever they live they leave a mess. If you have a car parked somewhere, they're sure to find it. :-X

i like pigeons. i used to raise racing pigeons when i was a kid. i keep trying to attract them to hang out on my windowsill here with bread, but it only sort of works, since they're not too bright.

Do you know the "children of lir" story? I feel like I should know, but I don't.

All of the pictures are really beautiful! Makes me wish I were there! *so jealous* :)

in fact, i do, it's one of my favorites. a short, prosaic version:

Lir and his wife had four children, but his wife died (or had to go into the otherworld to rest for a thousand years, not really clear), and he married his wife's sister Aoife (not to be confused with the warrior queen Aoife who bore Cuchulain's only son). Lir was very devoted to his children and Aoife became very jealous and wanted to get rid of them. However, she was unable to bring herself to kill them outright, so she turned them into swans until such time as a man from the North lay with a woman of the South and they heard first bell of Christianity. Aoife told Lir his children had drowned, but he discovered the truth and had Aoife turned into an air spirit. 900 years later, both of these things happened, and the children returned to their human form, but as they were very old, they died almost immediately after being baptised into the new faith.

Aha!! I KNEW I'd heard it! (and I've also read the Tain, when I took a medieval lit class at UNM). And I also really like the name Aoife.

Thanks for the reminder! It's a sweet, sad story.

Very picturesque photos ... definately postcard quality. The cathedral is awesome, and I like the ones of the island & the patterned causeway stones.

BTW, how do you get LJ to display photos like that? Is it a paid-account feature? What's the special coding to do it (I tried looking in the LJ help section, but I missed it if it's in there).

i'm not sure if it's a paid feature or not...there's a "gallery" option where you can upload pics directly to a space in lj itself, and once you've done that, you can just tell the gallery wizard to post them to a journal entry.

although...if you had pictures hosted somewhere, you can just write straight html into a lj entry and format them however you like.
