12:06 pm - mmm linux

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

just spent literally hours updating my much-neglected linux install. and, i managed not to break anything even with a dist-upgrade. now, if i could only find the newest version of Libranet to download for free somewhere.

ilcylic took me out to sushi last night {hug} and then over to see his new house, which is awesome. ironically, i have been eating almost nothing but seafood since coming to visit a landlocked state. opted to have a lazy rest of the night rather than go see Echoing Green/Leiahdorus, to karaoke, or to anime/depressing film night at _wirehead_'s. sorry all. but i did have jello shots for the first time. while interesting, jello is just as scary made with vodka as it is on its own. today, however, i have thoughts of going to shoot things with net9ngel, barjack, and damndirtyzombie if only they'd tell me when and where and what i should bring with me. ;)

probably too late, but bring earplugs, or borrow ear protectors, sunscreen, possibly a hat.. and sensible shoes! and probably a water bottle!

Hmmm. I spent this morning doing similar linux-based wrangling. Various java things have been giving me grief (sorted, now), and I've been trying to put mpeg support into RedHat 9 (its absence didn't bother me when I had two machines, but now I only have one). It works, but my sound card is not 100% happy with the OSS drivers.

The latest stable Debian is due out sometime soon, though. Maybe I'll switch over to that, as I Debian used to run rather well on my old machine.

yeah, you should rid yourself of the shackle that is RedHat. in the absence of Debian flavoured Debian, Libranet flavoured Debian is awesome, and i've heard really good things about Ubuntu flavoured Debian. also, use alsa instead of OSS if you can get it working.

Hmm .. I've heard some good stuff about Ubuntu, too, but I think I'll wait for the release of Sarge, as I'm comfortable with Debian flavoured Debian, and it has the longer track record.

The Alsa drivers didn't work with my (dodgily implemented) AC'97 sound chip. When I replace RedHat, I might take the oppurtunity to throw in the less 'feature-rich', but much more stable, Creative card that I have lying around.
