03:51 pm - why do i find Microsoft evil and Google divine?

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

for those of you who are Windows users, you've probably all already seen Google Talk, but just in case you haven't. damned thing is tiny, uses the open source Jabber IM protocol, supports VoIP and does pretty much nothing else (which frankly, i think is neat). they have plans to add a bit more to it, but are still looking to keep it small. things it could use in my few minutes of testing: chat logging and the ability to send offline messages.

someday i will live in GoogTopia, a fully funded Corptocratic subsidiary of Google Inc. and i will be happy. ;P

The cool thing is you can probably also use any client that supports Jabber to connect. Which means I can probably use GAIM, and thus, OTR.

And if not, I'll just have to poke at Nikita. :)

The mothership in Mountain View is probably as close as you get right now. It's weird. You can get your drycleaning done, do your laundry, get your hair cut, car washed, oil changed, eat three meals a day plus lots of snacks, swim, shower, play volleyball on a sand court, work out, see a doctor, drive electric scooters around... all without leaving the Googleplex and mostly free (haircuts and car things cost money).

One problem is that is encourages people to rarely leave but I can ignore that, the problem I have with is is that MtV is standard Califnordian suburbia, i.e. really fecking boring. I end up driving into the city to do most anything for the evening and that's one of the reasons I ended up here instead...

Depending on the department they might be the same job description but not the same job; been growing very fast.

Don't know about the first but operations sysadmin groups (SysOps or SRE) have been growing a lot, several people have started in my group in Dublin after me and I've only been there a few months. Internal company details are hard to talk about, though :/
